Why should we listen to voices from Africa?

Most of you will probably see the title of this and pass on...
Talk about Africa is not on your radar. Well, there are two good reasons why we as Christians need to be listening to voices from Africa:

1. The church is now vastly non-western. It is African, Asian, and Latin American. These are the places where the church is not only large, but growing and vibrant.
2. Jesus is most often found among the poor and on the margins. If you want to know where Jesus is, and what he is doing today, look in Africa!

Wisdom of the Sadhu

"The West is like Judas Iscariot, who ate with Yesu, only to later deny him. The West ought to fear the fate of Judas, lest it hang itself on the tree of learning. You have so many privileges. We in the East have to give up many things when we become Christians. For you, it is not so. Therefore be careful that you don't lose your only possibility for eternal happiness. I am reminded of the hunter who was pursued by a tiger. He had no fear because his hut was nearby and he was sure that he had the key in his pocket. On reaching it, however, the key was gone, and although there was only the thickness of the door between him and safety, he was lost."

Sadhu Sundar Singh (1889-1929) follower of Jesus from India.

Wisdom of the Sadhu
Teachings of Sundar Singh
Edited by Kim Comer

Some time ago I read the story of Sundar Singh’s life (1889-1929) and was excited by his simple faith, as he walked the length and breadth of India as a Sadhu, an Indian holy man, spreading the love of God and the teachings of his son Jesus. So familiar to most of us, so new to the majority of his listeners. It is an incredible story, as he became widely known far beyond India. Despite his beggar like existence, followers enabled him to visit and teach in Europe, the Orient and USA. He only left six slim books, but we now have this collection of anecdotes, sayings, parables, and meditations from those and other obscure sources, to make his teachings accessible to another generation. Panda keeps on pondering

Panda's Ponderings... But who's Panda? Panda used to be my nickname when I was a little boy. This nickname was given to me by my father who named me after a comic figure from a newspaper.

Panda is less known than some other creations of Dutch cartoonist Marten Toonder, such as Oliver B Bumble and Tom Puss, but I think it is a funny name and I have adopted it as my internet ID.

Marten Toonder died last Wednesday at the age of 93 in Amsterdam, leaving an enormous heritage of comic books and illustrations.

Power to Change

Following yesterday's post - please read these testimonies:

My life is so different now that I know Jesus. I’m just so happy. I feel so blessed. I can manage anything. You know, when God is in your life, nothing is impossible. Having a relationship with Him is so amazing. You get up in the morning and you know that you’re not alone. The big thing for me is to try to involve Him in everything I do. It can be a lonely place being on the road, living out of a suitcase - but when you’ve got “The Best” with you, you can handle anything! As I wrote in one of my songs, there’s such great hope out there, there’s a banner of hope when you come to know Jesus and begin to follow His word, when God becomes your God and gently calls you into a new way.
Moya Brennan (born as Máire Ní Bhraonáin, better known as Máire Brennan - singer from the Irish Celtic band Clannad)

Watching God heal our family and pull us off the road to divorce has been true adventure. It cost the government $400 million for me to walk three days on the moon—and it’s over. But to walk with Jesus is free, and it lasts forever.
Charles Duke (astronaut)

With God's help, I've been able to deal with the pain in my life. His healing hand came into my heart and touched me. It is miraculous what the Lord can do in a life when the reins are handed over to Him. God is so alive and real. With Him in control, I have a peace that lives and breathes in me, no matter what obstacles I face in my life.
Kelita Haverland (businesswoman / musician)

At 1:07 one morning, I turned my life over to Jesus Christ. I knew I had offended God with my pride, and I accepted the pardon made available through Christ. I gave Him control of my life, knowing it meant sharing it with my lab partner the next day. Funny thing: once I made my commitment, I eagerly anticipated that conversation. Pretty soon I was having more fun talking to people about Jesus Christ than discovering quasars at the edge of the universe.
Hugh Ross (astrophysicist)

The love of Christ makes us do what we do to win men. We believe that one man died for all people. To God it is as if we all died with him. He died for all, so that those who live would not live to please themselves. But they should live to please him who gave his life for them and rose again from death. So then we no longer know people by what we see on the outside. There was a time when we knew Christ that way, but now we do not know him that way any longer. So, if any man belongs to Christ, he is a new person. His old life has gone. You see, he has begun a new life. But it is God who has done all this. He sent Christ to make peace with us and to bring us back to himself. Now he has given us the work of bringing other people back to God.
[2 Corinthians 5:14-18 NIV]

Peace with God

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. [Romans 5:1 NIV]

Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea. [Micah 7:18,19 NIV]

Our guilt has separated us from a holy God, but He didn’t give up on us. God gave his only Son as a sign of his love. In doing so, He paid the price for our sin and now we can be completely free. The gap between our heart and God’s heart has been bridged by the cross of Christ. This cross is the only way back to the Father. I have accepted this sacrifice and because of that I am surrounded by God’s grace and sheltered by his love.

And you know what? All of this can be yours. Confess your sins to God in prayer, accept the sacrifice of God’s Son and ask Jesus to come into your heart as your Lord and Saviour. Why wait any longer?

If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? [Romans 8:31-35]

For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Jesus Christ. [1 Timothy 2:5 NIV]

For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. [1 Peter 3:18 NIV]

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. [Romans 5:8 NIV]

God has provided the only way. Each person must make a choice.

Prayer Request

We are trying to get permission from the Chinese authorities to publish a Chinese edition of a well-known classical Dutch Children's Bible. Unfortunately the first request has been turned down by the censor, but I trust God will make a way for us.
Our only goal is to share the Good News with the kids of China, we are not making any money on this project. We know God loves China en He certainly loves the new generation - all the little kids who are also created in His image.
My contact in China has asked me to pray and I ask everybody to pray with me for this good cause. Thank you!
Blessings

Teach the teacher

Sosha, our 11 year old daughter, told us about her teacher's reaction to the parable of the lost son. Her teacher, a nice young lady, told the class that she didn't quite understand the meaning of this famous parable. She thought that is was not right that the 'lost son' was welcomed home by his father with a party, while his hard-working, obeying brother never had such a celebration in his honour. 'That seems to be a bit unfair', the young teacher concluded.

Then Sosha explained to her teacher and the kids in her class that God throws a party in Heaven each time somebody comes back to Him, after wandering away from the Father. The teacher replied: 'I guess you are right about that...'

Yesterday - the last day before the summer holidays - the teacher had a positive message for all the boys and girls in class. To Sosha she said: 'I think you are a wise girl, because of your faith. I hope you have learned a few things from me, but I have certainly learned something from you! I've been thinking a lot about what you told me regarding that story of the lost son. I had to think about that explanation while I was driving home in my car and during the night before I could get to sleep'.

What about that!? I think this is a great testimony that makes me very proud and very glad at the same time. I trust that the heavenly Father is smiling at my girl and at her teachable teacher!

Under the acacias (click on the image to visit this weblog)

Yesterday I came across an interesting posting on Under the Acacias (a Missionary blog from Keith Smith, an Englishman who is doing evangelism, church-planting, and social ministry among the Fulani, a Muslim, traditionally nomadic, pastoral people in Burkina Faso). I am impressed by his respectful approach and strong testimony.
Please read this quotation and click on the image above if you want to read about the way Keith Smith approaches the Muslims in Burkina Faso!

Muslims do suffer from being vilified in much western, and even in much Christian perspective. Of course there is a whole spectrum of different kinds of Muslim, including the fanatical extremists, just as there are in Christianity or in any other sector of society. Yet from my experience, it seems that most Muslims are genuine, generous people who just want to live in peace, provide for their families, and know that they are right with God.
I can recognise the presence of God in the Muslim's desire for Him and desire to live rightly before Him, in his search for righteousness and forgiveness, and in the generosity, hospitality, and respect that come from that. I believe unashamedly that Jesus Christ is the way forward for the Muslim on his journey to find those things.
But God has set eternity into the human heart, and we need to recognise the validity of the starting place of each person's journey. Read this quote in the context of the original posting
Please also read the former entry about the Christian approach to Muslims and the example of Brother Andrew.

I Sincerely Love All Muslims

Today I've had a very interesting meeting with Anne van der Bijl (a.k.a. Brother Andrew, founder of Open Doors International) and the American author Al Jansen. Together we've discussed plans for a new book about Christians in the Muslim world.

Last year we - Ark Boeken Publishing House - have published the Dutch edition of Light Force (see cover picture above - please click here for more information about this excellent book!)

Brother Andrew and Al Jansen are still in the writing process and it is too early to give you more information about this new publishing project. However, I can tell you that a meeting with Brother Andrew is always a special experience, because this man is a true follower of Christ! He travels around the globe, visits persecuted Christians everywhere and does everything he can to support them, even if this means risking his own life! (And this extraordinary man is 77 years old... and still going strong!)

I highly respect Brother Andrew because of this, but also because he is not taking sides in political debates (although he is brave enough to speak up for the oppressed people, the 'underdogs' of this world). His priority is strengthening the world-wide body of Christ (i.e. the Christian community, the Church as a whole), especially in those countries where Christians are persecuted and struggling to survive.

Brother Andrew and his organisation Open Doors used to focus on the former Soviet Union and the communist world for many decades. (You've probably heard about God's Smuggler - a famous book about Bible smuggling during the cold war period - a must read if you want to know more about these times!)

While everybody was still concentrating on the situation in the communist world, Brother Andrew started working in countries that belong to the Muslim world. After the Iron Curtain fell, people in the West discovered that most former 'enemies' actually were decent human beings that were not 'out to get us'. Brother Andrew tries to show us that the same is true for most Muslims. He spells ISLAM as: I Sincerely Love All Muslims!

The Bible teaches us that God so loved the WORLD that He gave his only Son John 3:16 and Muslims are not excluded from our Father's love! But many Christians - especially after all the recent terrorist attacks in our part of the world - have to be reminded of this truth...

Brother Andrew always stresses that most Muslims are devout, sincere and peace loving people. As long as we keep looking at each other as the enemy, there will never be mutual respect and understanding. If we want to stop the violence from extremists and fanatics, we should start with trying to understand the position of people from 'the other side'. If we are not willing to take this first step, we will never get the opportunity to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with people of good will. This is exactly what Brother Andrew is doing and what he is asking his fellow Christians to do!

Spiritual Living in a Secular World - Quotations

Following yesterday's entry about Ajith Fernando's book Spiritual Living in a Secular World, I have selected some interesting quotes. More to follow!

From the back cover and the Introduction:
‘Christians today often feel without a voice: a minority in an indifferent world. Should we withdraw? Get stuck in, despite blurred boundaries? Like the Israelites in Babylon, for many of us this is a time of temptation and defeat.’
‘This book is written out of the conviction that the experiences of Daniel and his friends can equip us for spiritual living in an increasingly secular world.’

“Christians today are often accused of being narrow-minded, of trying to impose their views on others, of destroying the culture of the people, of lacking integrity, and of many other things. People end up having a stereotype of what Christians are like – and that image isn’t very flattering. Yet when people meet committed Christians who are honest, hard-working, concerned for others, and polite, they are forced to reconsider their opinion of the gospel. This winsome witness of laypeople challenges the false stereotypes of Christianity prevalent in society.” [Page 14, 15.]

“The first approach to society is isolation. Some Christians say that because society is evil and against the kingdom of God they won’t get very involved in it. They don’t know much about what is happening in the world. They just survive and do church work. But with that approach we cannot fulfil Christ’s call to be ‘the salt of the earth’ (Matthew 5:13). Salt cannot do its work unless it penetrates the substance on which it acts. Even God, the eternal Word, had to become flesh and make his dwelling among us (John 1:14) before he saved us. When praying for his disciples Jesus said, ‘My prayer is not that you take them out of the world… As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world’ (John 17:15, 18). With such words from the lips of our Master, we cannot isolate ourselves from the world.” [Page 17]

“An eminent British physician, Dr David Short, who was the chief of Clinical Medicine in the University of Aberdeen, says this to his fellow Christian doctors: ‘I think the low priority accorded to the reading of God’s Word is one of the greatest sources of weakness of Christians in our generation… Admittedly this takes time; and time is a rare commodity. But we can take time for anything we regard as important. If we only knew how our lives would be transformed if we made time to wait on God and read his Word, we should find the time somehow.’ Dr Short says that one of the most important habits he learned from his father, who was also a doctor, ‘was that of reading a part of the Bible every day.” [Page 20]

“Christians will always find that they are going against the tide. Therefore they must always be careful to maintain ‘gentleness and respect’. (...) Let us pray that unpopularity will never come to us because we are disrespectful or impolite. Let us pray that the charge of arrogance that is often made against us is always totally unfounded.” [Page 28 and 29]

“Now we often say, ‘Don’t look at us, look at Jesus.’ But before looking at Jesus, many people will first look at his followers to see whether what he has done for them makes Jesus worth looking at. Jesus himself knew this. So he said, ‘Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven’ (Mathew 5:16). Elsewhere he said, ‘By their fruit you will recognise them’ (Matthew 7:20).”

“Today there is a great need for us to emphasise the primacy of the joy of the Lord in the Christian life. I hope you do not mind my saying that I got quite concerned when I came to the West*. I found that when Christians talked about the blessings of God they mentioned things that most Christians in Sri Lanka could never have – like vacations in lovely spots, meals at fancy restaurants, cars and new dresses. Yet I do not think our people are less happy than those in the West, for the source of deepest joy has nothing to do with these things. So let’s put these earthly things low in our list of priorities. Then if we are deprived of them we will not worry too much. This, in turn, will make us more available to do whatever God wants, for we will be willing to make whatever earthly sacrifice that calling entails.” [Page 34]

* Ajith Fernando is from Sri Lanka. This remark reminds me of similar things said by Sadhu Sundar Singh. This famous disciple of Christ from India said that the West is behaving like Judas: ‘They have lived with Jesus for a long time, but they have betrayed Him’.

“The truth of God’s sovereignty over our circumstances may not come to each of us immediately when we face a crisis. Often our natural reaction is to be afraid and anxious. There are numerous examples of God’s great servants who were distressed over what they were encountering. Elijah told God he wanted to die (1 Kings 19:4). Jeremiah wished he had never been born (Jer 15:10; 20:14-15). Asaph said that it was in vain that he had lived a righteous life (Ps 73:13). In those times they acted without applying the promises of God to their situations. Yet these people did not proclaim their doubts in public and let others suffer because of their struggles. Instead they went to God and sought an answer. And answers did come to each of them.” [Page 44]

Spiritual Living in a Secular World

Currently I’m reading Ajith Fernando's Spiritual Living in a Secular World.

As Christians we are trying to live a godly life amidst the pressure from the surrounding secular culture. I am finding this is getting harder and harder to do. We do want to be a positive influence - like salt and light - but run the risk of being marginalised as irrelevant to this post-modern society.

We have to stand up for the truth of God's Word even when it is not the popular thing to do. The typical reaction to the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ today is: 'That may be true for you, but I happen to have my own opinion / my personal version of the truth...'

Fernando's book is based on the biblical story of Daniel and his friends, young Jewish exiles who had to live in slavery in Babylon. The strategy of the Babylonian empire was to train the most promising boys of each conquered country so that they would become loyal Babylonian administrators. Daniel and his friends were selected as special trainees. Although these young men had no other option than to adjust to their surroundings, they did so without compromising their strong religious convictions.

I believe this book is very helpful for people like me who want to follow Jesus in a world that is drifting further and further away from God and his eternal laws. In my country confessing Christians still are quite influential, but we can not ignore the fact that we are becoming a small minority. I wonder if there ever was a time when there was a majority of confessing Christians in the Netherlands, or anywhere else in the world for that matter.

I am all in favour of democracy and I will obey our government and laws to the best of my ability, but most of all I have to listen to the Word of God. Fortunately this is still possible because most of our laws are based on biblical truth and many people still adhere to Judeo-Christian values whether they recognize them as such or not... However, the tide is quickly turning and Christianity is becoming a counter culture - again! Personally I believe that true followers of Christ have always been an influential minority in this world. Do you agree with me?

Daniel in the Lion's den as painted by Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens.

Anyway, if you are interested in this topic, I recommend reading this thought-provoking and highly readable book. I hope to share some quotes and thoughts with you tomorrow - please bear with me! And if you already have a copy of this book, please read with me...

Champs!

Of course nobody wants to know that the Dutch baseball team has become European Champions 2005. I will not pay too much attention to the fact that our arch-rivals from Italy were beaten 15-0 in the finals. Why rub it in? We'll just have a quiet celebration over here. For the Dutch national baseball team this is the nineteenth title in the history and the fourth consecutive. So what is all the fuss about? Come on, there are more important things in life!

YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! YEAH!
Please excuse me, I just couldn't help myself...

IL TITOLO EUROPEO RESTA ALL'OLANDA
L'Olanda ha battuto l'Italia con un pesante 15-0 in 7 riprese e si conferma Campione d'Europa. Per gli arancioni è il quarto titolo consecutivo.

Agree to disagree

Bono showed this message to the U2 fans in the Amsterdam Arena last Wednesday (see my former posting). I agree that we need to respect people, whatever their religious convictions or political ideas. This doesn't mean that we have to believe that all religions and political ideas are equaly true. I do claim the right to have a religious conviction - it's not just a hobby or a vague idea to live by.

We need to defend religious and political freedom and I also think that we should be kind to each other. But that doesn't mean that I have to agree with everybody - nor does it mean that I always have to be 'tolerant' (tolerance seems to be the highest standard to live by these days, but I prefer to live by LOVE - and although love is very accepting and forgiving, it can also be very strict and demanding). Please correct me if I'm wrong... because that is a loving thing to do! And if you can't convince me, let's just agree to disagree and let's live in peaceful coexistence together.

Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.
Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. For, whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil. 1 Peter 3:8-12 NIV

Unos, dos, tres…catorce!

Hello, hello! Well... I've got some catching up to do! This was a super week... Last Wednesday I was one of the lucky 50,000 screaming, singing and dancing U2 fans in the Amsterdam Arena - home to the best football club in the world (Ajax, of course). A great venue to watch a football match, but not the best place in this little country for a rock concert... But hey, who cares?? It was the best gig ever and we all had a great time!!

‘Ik houd van Holland’ - I love Holland - Bono told the excited audience in the Amsterdam Arena - and no doubt Holland loves U2 just as much. Of course all artists try to give you the impression that they have ‘a special connection’ with the country or the city where they perform (Hello... uhm... Where are we? In Holland? Okay, Hello Copenhagen, we love you!) - but I believe Bono was not kissing up.
U2's international breakthrough started in the Netherlands with their very fist #1 hit ‘I will follow’ and they also played at the PinkPop festival in 1981 - as a relatively unknown band from Ireland. Imagine that! So Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn is just one of the Dutch U2 connections.
I am not a fanatic fan - just someone who happens to love U2's music and I also admire Paul Hewson (Bono's real name) as a person (but he is NOT my idol, bucause I don't have any idols!)
I will write a bit more later - there are too many things for me to do right now.

‘We want to say so much tonight,’ explains Bono, almost lost for words at times. ‘Most of all we want to thank you for giving us a great life.’ The Netherlands, he continues, is a ‘place that still plays us on the radio, still wants to see us in your football stadiums’ a place that still sees U2 as ‘about the present.’ source

Our very own Watergate scandal

Tonight I told a little bedtime story to my daughters Sosha (11) and Pascalle (8). I am always making up stories about a big elephant and his little son, a funny monkey and a friendly giraffe. This time the little elephant had to bring a small basket with strawberries to grandma, who lives at the other side of the forest. Daddy elephant told his son to stay on the road and he warned him not to wander off into the woods. The little elephant felt like eating some of the strawberries, but he was an honest and courageous little elephant, so he didn't give in to the temptation.

Completely unexpected the big bad wolf turned up. He wanted to have one of the fresh strawberries, but the little elephant stood firm against the enemy and kept the delicious fruit in his possession. As we all know, the big bad wolf is a real creepy, slimy character. This time he told the little elephant to take a short-cut through the forest, so that he could be with his grandma a little sooner (yeah, I am such an original story teller).

Despite all the good advice from both of my daughters, who interrupted my perfect story line by telling the little elephant NOT to eat one of the strawberries and NOT to wander off into the dark forest - the elephant took the bad advice from the big bad wolf. Of course the little elephant got completely lost in the forest, became very tired and very hungry and almost started eating the strawberries after all.

In the meantime grandma made an emergency phone call to big daddy elephant, because by now she became VERY worried (about her grandson and about the delicious strawberries, of course). The big daddy elephant immediately organized a search and rescue operation in which all the animals of the village were involved. They even used a helicopter to find the little elephant in the woods and by using a walkie-talkie they were able to guide big daddy elephant, the monkey, the giraffe and all the other animals to him.

Of course this bedtime story has a very happy ending too (after all, nobody wants their kids to go to bed crying). The local baker decided to make a giant, delicious cake and all the animals of the neighbourhood were invited for cake with strawberries at grandma's house. Except for the big bad wolf, who hadn't deserved such a treat.

I was quite proud of this unique story line that I'd made up right on the spot without using any ingredients from other famous stories. Yes, there is a good chance that I will someday be known as the Hans Christian Andersen from the Low Countries, I thought to myself...

Hmm. But why were both of my girls laughing at me and what were they hiding there?

"I have taped it all!" Sosha suddenly cried out, while she showed me the little cassette recorder that she had hidden under her pillow.

I told my girls that this was a really good joke! But now, to bed! (Because daddy needs to go to the dark Internet forest to tell all the big bad bloggers out there about this unbelievable but true Watergate story which has happened in our very own house tonight...)

A lovely evening at the beach

Tonight we've had a great time at the Noordwijk beach - together with some members of our church cell group and our kids Robin, Sosha and Pascalle. By the way, I've joined Flickr (online photo service from Yahoo) so now I can store and show my photos on the internet. You can click on the picture badge just below my Blogger profile (right!) if you want to see some more family pics. You can also click on this link.
Just to give you an impression...

Sleeping beauties

This is what I see sometimes when I want to give my girls a goodnight kiss before I go to to bed myself. Both of them have their own bed, of course, but sleeping together is so much cosier...

My prayers are with the people of London

I am shocked by yesterday's events in London and I pray that God will comfort the families that have to deal with the horrific consequences of this tragedy. I also pray that the perpetrators will be brought to justice soon. But even if they are able to escape their earthly judges, they will NEVER be able to escape the verdict of the Almighty - JHWH is His name!

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 1 Peter 5:8-9

Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay." Romans 12:19

Pray for the Persecuted Church

How do you pray for the persecuted Christians?
Brother Andrew: First, by identifying myself with the Persecuted Church. I want to be part of that; I want to feel their pain and feel their joy. The thing we have forgotten is that there is terrible pain -- the poverty and the discrimination and all the fathers in prison and the people blown up in churches. It happens in all these countries -- China, North Korea, Vietnam, Laos, India, and Pakistan -- and practically all the other countries from Indonesia to Morocco. I identify with them so the Lord can search me to pray for specific needs that come to my desk every day. Sometimes I cry, sometimes I don’t know how to pray. But I’m always saying, “Lord, I’m willing to go there.” source

For the third straight year, the isolated communist nation of North Korea remains atop the annual Open Doors International “World Watch List” of countries where Christians are persecuted.

“Christianity is observed as one of the greatest threats to the regime’s power,” the 2005 World Watch List report states. Exact figures are difficult to obtain, but it is believed that tens of thousands of Christians are currently suffering in North Korean prison camps, and at least 20 Christians were shot or beaten to death in 2004 while in detention.

“North Korea is the most repressive nation in the world…it certainly deserves its shameful ranking on the World Watch List,” says Open Doors USA President Dr. Carl Moeller. “It breaks my heart to hear some of the atrocities against our brothers and sisters there. The government will arrest not only a suspected dissident but also three generations of his family to root out the ‘bad’ influence. North Korea is suspected to detain more political and religious prisoners than any other country in the world.

“Yet we hear reports of how the church in North Korea continues to grow. Let’s continue to lift up the needs of our fellow believers in North Korea and in all the countries on the World Watch List.” Click here to open a Press Release (Word doc) about the current situation in North-Korea.

Join me and thousands of other Christians around the world in praying for the people of North-Korea and other countries where people are persecuted because of their religious beliefs and political convictions. The statues will topple, the walls will come down and peace and justice will come - because I believe that God will answer our prayers!

Soon Ok Lee is a North Korean refugee who was imprisoned and tortured for many years. She now lives in the USA and is the author of Eyes of the Tailless Animals (read more about this book on Soon Ok Lee's website). Not a pleasant read, but if you really want to know more about the plight of North Korean prisoners, this book tells you the horrible truth. You can order this book here. Soon Ok Lee asks Christians to pray for her country - so please set aside ten minutes to pray, preferably each week on a fixed time. Dutch link Open Doors

Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name's sake. Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?" Before our eyes, make known among the nations that you avenge the outpoured blood of your servants. May the groans of the prisoners come before you; by the strength of your arm preserve those condemned to die. Psalm 79:9-11

FAMILY UPDATE JULY 2005

The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. [1 Corinthians 12:12 NIV]

Last Sunday Lydia and I were officially introduced as members of De Meerkerk – the Evangelical (Baptist) church in our hometown Hoofddorp. We are attending this church since September 2004 – after our former church ‘dissolved’ (i.e. all the members of this small congregation in Haarlem decided to join other Evangelical churches – this was God’s timing, we believe. For us, as a family, it was time to join a new church in the place where we live).

We are happy with our ‘new family’ and we already feel at home. In our former congregation we didn’t have a formal membership – it consisted of a small group of Christians that gathered every Sunday and during the weeks at home for Bible studies and prayer meetings. Now we attend a small home group (cell group) as well and we like being part of a big church with small home groups!

Robin (13) is also part of a group of teenage boys from church. We feel it is important for him to have Christian friends in the place where we live and he enjoys meeting his new friends. Our daughters Sosha (11) and Pascalle (8) didn’t have any big problems with the transition to another church. Pascalle always needs some time to adapt, and she still misses the ‘old’ Sunday school, but we believe that she will do just fine.

Robin, Sosha & Pascalle
All our children are healthy and they have good grades at school (they are all promoted to the next class after the Summer holidays). We have many reasons to be thankful!

I am recently elected in the participation council (in Dutch: medezeggenschapsraad) of the primary school where Sosha and Pascalle go. I think this is a good opportunity to help the school, the parents and the pupils. I will give it my best shot!

At Ark Boeken (the publishing house where I work as publisher) we have a busy period - trying to reach many deadlines just before the holidays begin. It's a lot of fun though, because we are looking forward to publishing exciting new books, calendars and greeting cards.

Next month we plan to go on a holiday to Finland – the country where my eldest brother Bob, his wife Leila and their (grand) children live. Bob is a pastor and a teacher at a theological seminary (International School for Bible and Missions) from the Evangelical church in Finland. We are all really looking forward to having this family vacation! We will travel by car and boat (a long boat trip from Rostock in Germany to Hanko in Finland – which happens to be the place where Bob & Leila live!)

I will keep you posted. Feel free to comment or ask questions!

Not created by coincidence

Bert Bakker, a member of the Liberal Democratic party (D66) in our Parliament, has proposed to leave out the Genesis creation account in Biology classes. This proposal is clearly a reaction to all the fuss about intelligent design recently in our country. Unfortunately (for Bert Bakker) his proposal did not have a chance to be accepted by a majority, so he withdrew it.

I like the comments made by Christian MP’s Tineke Huizinga (ChristenUnie) and Bas van der Vlies (SGP) in Parliament. Tineke Huizinga asked Bakker if he intended to keep pupils ignorant by not telling them about creation. Good question!

Bas van der Vlies had a nice present for Bert Bakker: a CD from Haydn’s “Die Schöpfung” (Creation). “All the notes from this musical piece didn’t fall into place by sheer coincidence”, Van der Vlies told Bakker when he presented his gift.

I think Bas van der Vlies did the right thing and I really like his gesture. It is a nice, respectful way to make a point! Let’s pray that Bert Bakker will soon learn about his loving Creator before he has to meet Him one day face to Face.

Now is the time to be reconciled with God, through Jesus Christ, his only Son! An honest prayer is all it takes.

You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this:
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. [Romans 5:6-11 NIV]

The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. [Acts 17:24-27 NIV]

Google Earth: it is AWESOME!

If you have a fast Internet connection and a good PC - I can recommend downloading Google Earth It really is a fantastic piece of software! You can look at the earth as if you are flying in a Space Shuttle. Zoom in and you can see many details - cities, football stadiums, air fields, large buildings and breathtaking nature.

The white circle in this picture indicates the place where we live in the Netherlands: Hoofddorp, Haarlemmermeer (you can also see Schiphol Airport). Click on the image if you want to enlarge it. Warning: using Google Earth can be very addictive...

If you've also installed Google Earth - please send me a similar JPG picture to show me where you live on the globe. Just for fun! If you can't install the program and you have a request, you can also let me know. I will try to find your home town and send you an image if possible (JPG).

"This is really not an issue of politics, this is an issue of morality"

"This is really not an issue of politics, this is an issue of morality" (Bob Geldof)

"This is not Live Aid 2. These concerts are the start point for The Long Walk To Justice, the one way we can all make our voices heard in unison. This is without doubt a moment in history where ordinary people can grasp the chance to achieve something truly monumental and demand from the 8 world leaders at G8 an end to poverty. The G8 leaders have it within their power to alter history. They will only have the will to do so if tens of thousands of people show them that enough is enough. By doubling aid, fully cancelling debt, and delivering trade justice for Africa, the G8 could change the future for millions of men, women and children."
Bob Geldof source

"So no one is talking about aid in the old sense, the money down a rat hole thing. No one wants that. It makes matters worse, not better. This is new targeted aid. Now, there will be some countries where mercy is needed and aid has to go--certain levels of aid have to go. You can't hold people responsible, the populace responsible for their dictators. But in those instances, you just root the aid away from the governments and through the NGOs on the ground. That's the modern way." Bono source

"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?' The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'" Jesus Christ Matthew 25:37-40

You don't HAVE to blog

I am not going to make excuses for being a lousy blogger myself. Instead I intend to collect quotes from lousy bloggers who are making up excuses for being such lousy bloggers. Ready?

Lousy blogger # 1

But I have to admit I did write a similar excuse recently... Oops!

Lousy blogger #3 (Yep, that's me)
I've been a bit quiet for a while. Don't worry - I am still alive and well. It is just a very hectic period and I've been busy with my publishing work and blah, blah, blah...
source

Now let's be honest: do you feel guilty for not writing a new entry today / this week / last month? But WHY!? Are you afraid that people might discover that your life isn't that exciting after all? If so, please don't write about it, because I will certainly cut & paste your excuses to make sure that I always have something to post.

Did your write similar excuses yourself or did you come across some funny / stupid excuses from lousy bloggers - just let me know and if they are funny / stupid enough, I will most certainly post them.

And for all you bloggers out there: You must live your life but you don't HAVE to blog about it. Get a life!
(Yes, and that includes THIS lousy blogger)

Scoring for Jesus

Players of the the Brazilian football team got some media attention this week with their JESUS LOVES YOU T-shirt messages, after winning the FIFA Confederations Cup in Germany (see my previous entry). I did some Googling tonight and found this amazing story on a German website. Read this and find out how the very brief T-shirt sermons started in the German football competition some time ago...
Jesus loves you anyway!
During a football match in Germany two Brazilian players from opposing teams showed a hidden message on their T-shirts to the public. Claudemir Jeronimo Barreto a.k.a. Cacau - in his first game for Nürnberg - scored first and showed his T-shirt with the text JESUS LIVES AND LOVES YOU! Zé Roberto scored the equalizer for Bayer 04 Leverkusen and had a similar message: JESUS LOVES YOU! source
Cacau, where did you get this idea of showing T-shirts with 'Jesus messages' ?
I saw it in Brazil first. When I became a Christian, I wanted to share this news with all the fans: "Jesus loves you".
You started your T-shirt mission after scoring your first Bundesliga goal. What did you think when Zé Roberto scored 1:1 and showed his T-Shirt with "Jesus loves you" ?
At first I was sad, because of the equaliser. But as soon as I saw his Jesus-Shirt, I was happy again.
...in fact, you were so happy that you went on and scored 2:1. Don't you think it must be difficult for God to answer prayers from players who are competing against each other?
No, because I never pray for victory. I pray that God will protect us against injuries and I pray that His will may be done.
And what is God's will?
I don't know... and that's exactly why I am praying! Because God loves me and He knows what's best for me. So it doesn't matter whether we win or lose.

Brazilian football champs showing their true colours

The Brazilian football team celebrated their victory in the Confederations Cup last Wednesday in Frankfurt, Germany. The players were wearing their famous yellow shirts - and after the match they put on some white shirts with a clear message to the whole world!
Read this off side comment on www.jesus.de (in German...) about a dumbfounded German TV commentator...

Playing well and praying well... and not ashamed of the Gospel at all!

I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.
[Romans 1:16 NIV]

Are the Brazilian football players alone in their enthusiasm for Jesus? No, not quite... Below you can see pictures from the March for Jesus in Sao Paulo Brazil in 2004 and 2005 - with more than 2 million people walking the streets to show their commitment to Christ! source
