I've been a bit quiet for a while. Don't worry - I am still alive and well. It is just a very hectic period and I've been busy with my publishing work and with reading the best apologetic book I've read since The Case for God by Peter S Williams (you can read more about that book here).
I was going to recommend I Don't Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist by Norman L. Geisler and Frank Turek to all of you out there, but - being a simple Dutchman with a limited vocabulary in English - I just can't outdo the recommendation below - written on Amazon.com by an atheist who had enough courage to put his unbelief to the test! And you shouldn't waste time reading my review, just buy this book and reach your own conclusions.
But first read the five star review below by this sincere atheist. Pray for this person if you are a Christian and if you are an atheist yourself - I am happy to pray for you as well, just ask. (On second thought, don't take my word for it. Start praying yourself. You can do it secretly, so it will not be too embarassing and it won't hurt you at all. Moreover, you might be surprised by the answers to your honest prayers that I know you will receive).
I guess it would be wise to lock yourself away for a couple of days and read this book from cover to cover. It is truly a great read! And remember: I am a publisher so eventhough I consider myself to be a simple Dutchman - and proudly so - I do know something about books... I am still reading (263 of 448 pages) and enjoying every single word!
I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH FAITH TO BE AN ATHEIST
Having read quite a few Christian apologetics books, I feel I can say that this one is by far the best in scope, logic, and wit. The authors convincingly build up their case in layers, starting with well-reasoned arguments why God exists, and building in stages as to why Jesus is the way to go, once everything else is accepted. The authors include run-ins they've had with professors and debate opponents, making for an interesting read. The appendixes, which feature a mock dialogue between a Christian and an atheist, are entertaining. The book covers all the important issues that this topic entails, from cosmology, life origins, evolution, morality, and a defense of the Bible. No honest atheist can read this book without being impressed by the quality of the theistic arguments as presented by the authors. The objections of skeptics are confronted with confidence. Did it change my mind? It may have planted a seed. I highly recommend this book to both atheists and Christians, and to anyone else interested in this topic. It is VERY convincing. These guys know their stuff.

Excellent choice Paul. I read this book about eight months ago and have given away about half a dozen copies of it since then. A must read.

Ik ben erg benieuwd naar het boek. De recensies zien er erg goed uit. Laat je het ons weten wanneer het boek in het Nederlands te verkrijgen is?
Ha, die Supergans! Goed om weer van je te horen! Geniet je nog een beetje van de wittebroodsweken? :-)
Het is nog niet bekend of - en zo ja, wanneer - dit boek in het Nederlands zal verschijnen. Ik denk wel dat het zou moeten worden vertaald en uitgegeven en mogelijk gaan we dat bij Ark Boeken doen. Ik heb het boek nu bijna uit, het is TOP. Wanneer Engels lezen geen groot probleem oplevert, dan zou ik je aanraden om niet te wachten op een Nederlandse editie. Ik heb nog nooit een boek gelezen dat zo systematisch een pleidooi houdt voor de waarheid van de bijbel en het christelijk geloof. De eerste hoofdstukken zijn helemaal gebaseerd op logica / ratio. Ook wanneer je de bijbel er niet bij openslaat, kun je de redenering stap voor stap volgen. Het is zoals Paulus zegt: "Want wat een mens over God kan weten is hun bekend omdat God het aan hen kenbaar heeft gemaakt. Zijn onzichtbare eigenschappen zijn vanaf de schepping van de wereld zichtbaar in zijn werken, zijn eeuwige kracht en goddelijkheid zijn voor het verstand waarneembaar. Er is niets waardoor zij te verontschuldigen zijn, want hoewel ze God kennen, hebben ze hem niet de eer en dank gebracht die hem toekomen." Romeinen 1:19-21
Het is een prettige leesbaar, goed onderbouwd boek, bovendien met de nodige humor geschreven.

Supergans, we hebben een officiële optie op dit boek. Het wordt nu nog door een collega van mij beoordeeld, maar we hebben in ieder geval de eerste keuze om dit boek uit te geven.
Als je niet kunt wachten, raad ik je aan om het boek van Willem Ouweneel te lezen dat zojuist bij Medema is verschenen - ook als je wel kunt wachten ;-) Gisteren heb ik Ouweneel over dit boek horen spreken in onze gemeente. Een aanrader!
